A coffee with bright and vibrant red notes from the heart of Kenya's coffee growing regions.

This is the second year we've worked with coffee from Kii Factory, which receives coffees from more than 950 smallholder farmers in the Kirinyaga  region of Central Kenya.

There was a time when the neighbouring coffee growing region, Nyeri was more famous for the greater coffees than Kirinyaga - however this has totally changed the last few years.

The coffees from Kii are traditionally dry fermented before they are washed and graded in channels, and dried on raised beds. The farmers mainly grow SL28 and SL34, but as with almost all Kenyan Cooperative coffees it can be a mix of everything. Other normal cultivars are K7, Ruiru 11 and now also Batian.

We selected this coffee for its bright, fruit notes and vibrant acidity. Brewed as an espresso coffee, enjoy notes of red currants, cranberries and hibiscus flowers.

KII FACTORY

The Kii factory is located at a good altitude, in an area where they tend to produce more tea than coffee. It's under the greater Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society, that has other great performing factories like Kinagoi and Karimikui.

Each lot at the Kii and other Rungeto washing stations consists of coffees from hundreds of smallholders in the area surrounding the washing station (factory). They sort the cherries before the coffee goes into production.
