Mutheru Factory is a small, quality-focused washing station in Meru County, serving a network of local smallholders. Ripe cherries are hand-sorted, depulped, fully washed and then slow-dried on raised beds. That patient, meticulous approach preserves what we love about great Kenyan coffee: vivid fruit, exceptional clarity and a clean, lingering finish.
This AA lot is a bright, elegant expression of the region. In the cup we’re tasting blackberry, gooseberry and crisp grape, with a taut, well-structured acidity and a refined sweetness that carries through to the aftertaste. There’s a gentle floral lift, but it’s the precision and purity of the fruit that really shines.
We’ve roasted this lightly for espresso to emphasise clarity and balance. Expect a focused, fruit-forward shot that’s refreshing rather than heavy, delicious on its own or as a long black. It’s a lively option in milk too, bringing a clean, dark-berry character.
The varieties here are the Kenyan classics—SL28 and SL34—alongside Ruiru 11, processed as a fully washed lot. “AA” is a screen-size grade (larger beans), not a quality judgement in itself, though here it coincides with the kind of transparency and structure we look for. The brilliance is created at origin; our job is simply to roast in a way that honours it.
